Sephiria Mechanics: Damage, Artifacts, Tablets, and Runs

Understand the core Sephiria mechanics: run progression, Artifact placement, Tablets, combos, damage types, and permanent upgrades.

Sephiria combines a room-by-room run with a persistent progression layer. Your final result depends on more than weapon damage: Artifact placement, Tablet adjacency, combo thresholds, resource costs, and the order of upgrades all interact.

The Two Progression Layers

Current Run

Weapons, Artifacts, Tablets, costumes, Talents, and rewards shape the current attempt. A strong item is only useful when its effect is active and its placement or combo conditions are satisfied.

Permanent Progression

Destiny Inscription improves future attempts and should be evaluated separately from a temporary run bonus. Use the Destiny Inscription guide when deciding where permanent resources belong.

How the Inventory Board Works

Artifacts can have a footprint, level cap, combo tag, activation condition, or placement requirement. Tablets can change eligible neighboring Artifacts, so filling every cell immediately can reduce the value of a later reward.

Use this order when placing an item:

  1. Read the effect and its current level.
  2. Check the footprint and open cells it needs.
  3. Check Tablet direction and neighboring conditions.
  4. Confirm the combo tag and the realistic threshold for this run.
  5. Verify the resulting stats before entering the next combat room.

The Artifact Constraints guide covers edge cases, while the Inventory Grid guide focuses on practical board planning.

Damage Categories

Sephiria distinguishes weapon, physical, elemental, debuff, Grimoire, and other effect-specific damage. Do not assume that a bonus containing the word “damage” applies to every hit. Check whether the tooltip names the attack, attribute, debuff, or activated effect it modifies.

Chaos and Wound interactions are especially version-sensitive. The Chaos Damage guide explains the terminology and why an old Void or Chaos explanation may not match the current tooltip.

Combos and Scaling

Matching Artifact tags can activate combo effects. A combo is valuable only when its threshold supports the weapon and reward pool available in the current run. A partially built Precision, Ember, Glacier, Dark Cloud, Guardian, or Academy direction may be weaker than a complete smaller combo with better uptime.

When comparing two rewards, ask:

  • Does the item improve the main attack immediately?
  • Does it advance a combo that can realistically reach its useful threshold?
  • Does it preserve the board space needed by Tablets?
  • Does it solve the next room's threat, or only improve an ideal late-game number?

Resource and Activation Rules

Activated Artifacts and Grimoires can consume MP and use separate cooldown or haste rules. A build with high theoretical damage can still fail if it cannot afford the rotation or has no fallback while the active effect is unavailable.

For weapons, the first upgrade often changes the base behavior and the second upgrade extends that choice. Review the weapon upgrades guide before taking an attractive branch that conflicts with the build's actual damage source.

Patch-Sensitive Information

The game has changed weapon upgrades, Artifacts, damage terminology, and story content across updates. Treat exact coefficients, drop pools, and bug behavior as versioned facts. When a guide and the current tooltip disagree, use the current in-game wording and the newest official patch note, then record the date of the check.

Mechanics Checklist

  • Identify the damage source before stacking a bonus.
  • Keep one flexible inventory area until the build direction is clear.
  • Treat Tablet adjacency as part of the build, not decoration.
  • Separate temporary run power from Destiny Inscription progress.
  • Recheck old numbers after a balance or content patch.
