Sephiria Chaos Damage Guide: Wound, Elements, and Weapon Interactions

Understand Sephiria Chaos damage, how Wound effects interact with it, which weapon upgrades convert damage, and how recent patches changed the terminology.

What Chaos Damage Means in Sephiria

Chaos damage is a damage classification used by Sephiria's weapon, debuff, and artifact systems. It should not be treated as a universal replacement for every elemental bonus: the exact interaction depends on the attack or effect that created it and on the wording of the item or patch note.

The game's terminology has changed over time. Recent update notes distinguish Chaos damage from Void damage and describe changes to how physical and elemental damage are classified. When a tooltip and an old guide disagree, use the current tooltip and the newest official update note.

Chaos, Elements, and Void Are Not the Same

Use this practical distinction when reading a build:

TermHow to interpret it
Chaos damageA current damage classification used by specific attacks, conversions, and debuff effects.
Elemental damageFire, ice, lightning, or another named attribute shown by the attack or stat system.
Void damageA separate classification used in earlier terminology and later changed in several mechanics.
Physical damageThe base classification for many weapon attacks before an upgrade or effect changes it.

Do not assume that every Chaos hit receives every elemental bonus. Check whether the effect says it inherits an attribute, uses the highest elemental damage, or directly deals Chaos damage.

Wound and Chaos Damage

Wound is a debuff family that can create or amplify Chaos damage in certain weapon paths. The weapon upgrades guide records Wound effects on multiple weapons, including a Wound damage-over-time effect and Wound Explosion interactions.

The important questions are:

  1. Does the attack apply Wound, consume Wound stacks, or only increase damage against a wounded target?
  2. Does the effect deal Chaos damage directly, or does it preserve the attack's original attribute?
  3. Does the relic or upgrade scale debuff damage, weapon damage, or both?
  4. Is the text from the current patch, or from an older version that used Void terminology?

Weapon Upgrade Interactions

Several upgrade paths make Chaos relevant without turning the whole weapon into a generic Chaos build. Examples documented in the current weapon data include:

  • Heretic Questioner: Converts weapon physical damage to Chaos-based damage and changes Whirlpool into Wound Explosion.
  • Wound-focused paths: Apply stacks over time and reward attacks that can maintain or consume those stacks.
  • Guard and special-attack paths: Some effects deal Chaos damage after a successful guard or special attack, while still scaling from the named attack bonuses.

How to Build Around Chaos Damage

Start With the Source Attack

Choose the weapon or upgrade that actually creates the Chaos effect first. Then add relics that improve the attack's real trigger: attack speed for repeated hits, debuff duration or application for Wound, or special-attack damage for a guard-triggered effect.

Avoid Bonus-Type Assumptions

An item that increases fire, ice, lightning, physical, weapon, normal-attack, or debuff damage may not affect every Chaos hit. Test the current tooltip and combat result instead of stacking a bonus solely because the word “damage” appears in both descriptions.

Keep a Backup Damage Route

Chaos interactions can depend on a particular upgrade branch or debuff state. Keep a reliable base attack and a defensive fallback so the build still functions when the desired Wound setup does not appear.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating Chaos as an additional elemental type with automatic access to every elemental bonus.
  • Mixing Void terminology from an old guide with current Chaos wording.
  • Building around Wound without enough attack frequency to maintain stacks.
  • Selecting a Chaos conversion that disables the weapon behavior your relic board needs.
  • Ignoring the patch date of a damage table.

Version Notes

SteamDB patch notes document multiple changes to Chaos, Void, physical weapon damage, Wound Explosion, and Wound Aggravation. A Steam Community discussion also shows that players distinguish between an effect inheriting an original attribute and an effect explicitly dealing Chaos damage. These interactions should be rechecked after balance updates.
