Sephiria Artifact Constraints: Placement, Level, Combo, and Tablet Rules

Understand Sephiria Artifact constraints: placement rules, level limits, combo requirements, activated effects, and Tablet interactions.

Sephiria Artifact constraints are the rules that decide whether an Artifact can actually deliver its printed effect: its board position, level, combo tags, activation condition, and compatible Tablet relationship. This page explains what to check when an Artifact looks strong but does not behave as expected.

The Five Constraint Types

ConstraintWhat to check
PositionWhether the Artifact or its Tablet interaction depends on a specific cell or neighbor.
LevelThe current level, maximum level, and whether a Tablet can push the item beyond a useful threshold.
ComboThe tags required to activate or strengthen a combo effect.
ActivationWhether the effect is passive, triggered, conditional, or placed on the hotbar.
Rarity and poolWhether the item is available in the current pool or requires a special unlock condition.

The current game and tooltip take priority over older community tables because new patches can add, remove, or rework Artifacts.

Position and Tablet Constraints

An Artifact can be strong in one board arrangement and weak in another. Before moving it, check:

  1. Which adjacent cell supplies its important Tablet effect.
  2. Whether the Artifact needs an empty cell, an edge, or a particular direction.
  3. Whether moving it breaks an existing combo or activated effect.
  4. Whether the new position improves the Artifact enough to justify the lost relationship.

The preview screen is useful here. The community guide notes that you can adjust an Artifact's displayed level in preview with Q and E to see how Tablets would affect it before committing to the choice.

Level Limits

Artifacts show a current level and a maximum level. Raising an Artifact above its maximum does not continue to improve its effect, so a Tablet that adds levels may be better spent on another item once the cap is reached.

Some Tablet effects can lower an Artifact below level 0. The checked system reference describes an Artifact at a negative level as having no active effect, even though it can still count toward a combo. That makes a negative level a deliberate tradeoff rather than a free upgrade.

Combo Constraints

Combos reward collecting enough Artifacts with matching tags. The combo count can continue to matter even when an Artifact's own effect is disabled, but exceeding the maximum combo threshold does not keep increasing the combo effect.

Use this order when evaluating a new Artifact:

  • First, confirm that its own effect is usable at the planned level.
  • Second, check whether it advances a combo that the run can realistically complete.
  • Third, check whether the board still has room for the Tablet placements that make the combo worthwhile.

Do not take a weak Artifact only because its tag looks attractive if it destroys the run's main damage or recovery plan.

Activated Artifacts and Grimoire Rules

Some Artifacts add an action to the hotbar instead of providing only a passive stat. Grimoire Artifacts consume MP and use Grimoire Damage and Grimoire Haste differently from ordinary weapon or elemental damage. The general Artifacts guide covers the system vocabulary; this page focuses on the constraints that decide whether an effect can actually be used.

Check three things before building around an activated Artifact:

  1. Which resource it consumes.
  2. Whether its cooldown or trigger condition can be maintained.
  3. Whether your weapon and Talents provide enough support when the action is unavailable.

Known Version-Sensitive Fixes

SteamDB records a 0.9.6 fix for an Artifact constraint that failed at certain positions, specifically involving Cold Lock. This is useful evidence that position-dependent behavior can be patched without changing the broad system rules. It is also why old screenshots should not override the live tooltip.

How to Debug a Constraint Problem

When an Artifact appears inactive:

  1. Inspect its current level and maximum level.
  2. Remove any Tablet that lowers the level below zero.
  3. Move the Artifact to an open cell and test the effect.
  4. Check whether its combo or activation condition is satisfied.
  5. Compare the result with the current patch notes before reporting it as a bug.

FAQ

Can an Artifact count for a combo while its effect is disabled?

The checked system reference says an Artifact can still count toward a combo when its level is below zero, even though its own effect is inactive.

Can I place unlimited combo Artifacts?

You can carry more matching Artifacts than the combo threshold, but the combo effect does not keep increasing after its maximum count.

Do Artifact constraints ever change?

Yes. The update history includes fixes for position-related Artifact behavior, so verify current tooltips and patch notes when a rule appears inconsistent.
