Sephiria Killing NPCs Guide: Merchant Consequences and Secret Interactions

Learn what happens when you attack or kill NPCs in Sephiria, including merchant hostility, possible relic drops, friendly encounters, and safer alternatives.

Should You Attack NPCs in Sephiria?

Usually, no. NPC encounters can provide shops, artifacts, potions, quests, or progression interactions, while attacking them may remove a useful service or change later encounters. The result depends on the NPC and the current game version, so do not treat every friendly character as having the same consequence.

This page focuses on the decision before attacking. It does not claim to be a complete NPC database or a guaranteed drop table.

Wandering Merchant Consequences

The Wandering Merchant is the clearest documented case:

  • Attacking the merchant enough times can make the merchant hostile.
  • Killing a Wandering Merchant can make the merchant stop appearing or remain hostile in later interactions.
  • The result is not equivalent to defeating a normal combat enemy: you may lose access to a shop and its future inventory.
  • A merchant NPC can be associated with a unique relic drop, including the Warning Document in the current community reference, but the drop should be treated as version-sensitive rather than guaranteed.

If your run still needs an artifact, reroll, or emergency purchase, keep the merchant alive and use the shop first. The short-term combat reward is rarely worth losing a future shop without a specific reason.

Friendly NPCs and the Peaceful Modifier

Some runs include a modifier or encounter context that makes attacking friendly NPCs part of the risk-reward decision. The Sephiria secrets guide notes that the “A Peaceful Place” modifier matters when you plan to attack friendly NPCs; it does not prevent ordinary secret-room discovery.

Before attacking a friendly character, check:

  1. Whether the NPC has a shop, quest, donation, or unlock interaction you still need.
  2. Whether the current run has a modifier that changes friendly-NPC behavior.
  3. Whether the reward is confirmed for the current patch or only reported by players.
  4. Whether you can afford to lose the NPC in a future room or run.

Merchant, Potion Merchant, and Event NPCs

Do not combine every NPC category into one rule. The current references distinguish the Wandering Merchant from smaller wandering merchants and potion merchants. A consequence confirmed for one merchant type may not apply to another.

For potion and event decisions, check the Sephiria potions guide first. For relic acquisition, use the Sephiria relics guide, which separates merchant purchases from merchant-related drops.

When an NPC Fight Can Make Sense

An NPC fight can be reasonable when:

  • You have already used the service and no longer need the NPC.
  • The run is intentionally testing a documented drop or achievement condition.
  • The current patch and source confirm the expected reward.
  • You have accepted that the NPC may not return as a merchant or event option.

Do not attack simply to test the interaction in a strong run. Use a low-stakes run if you need to verify behavior yourself.

Common Mistakes

  • Killing a merchant before checking its inventory.
  • Assuming every NPC drops an item when defeated.
  • Treating a community-reported drop as a guaranteed current-patch reward.
  • Forgetting that hostility can affect later shop access.
  • Confusing the vampire bat event with a generic NPC-killing route. For that interaction, see the Secrets guide.

Evidence and Version Notes

The current evidence confirms merchant hostility and merchant-related reward context, but it does not provide a complete, stable table for every friendly NPC. NPC behavior can change with updates, so future additions should be tied to a dated in-game observation or a current community/official source.
